New York - Rocky Chin, candidate for the 1st District Council race, urged Governor Pataki take action on the Governor's Island issue before its too late. In a letter to the Governor dated April 19, 2001, which is attached to this release, Rocky noted the importance of the Island to New York and, specifically, District 1.
"District One, in which Governors Island is located, is in dire need for more open and recreational spaces. Residents in our District live in some of the most overcrowded and confined conditions of the City. Many of our parks are in disrepair and those in an adequate state are limited in space. The development of Governors Island would provide a great community benefit for all residents living in our District. Open playing fields, bike paths, and a park spanning several acres would bring new life to the residents of our District and all New Yorkers," said Rocky.
Noting that the Governor is a vocal supporter of President Bush, who blocked a move by former President Clinton to sell Governors Island to New York for as little as $1, Rocky urged the Governor "to use your influence within the Administration to reclaim Governors Island for New York now!"
Rocky has been a civil rights attorney at the New York City Human Rights Commission for 15-years, he is a past member of Community Board Three, and a long-time member of NYIC. For many years Rocky has been a staunch advocate for immigrant workers' rights, vigorous civil rights enforcement, police accountability, tough hate crimes legislation, and affordable housing for low income and working people. Rocky will draw upon his years of experience as a community leader and activist to bring about change for District 1.
