New York, N.Y. -- Rocky Chin, City Council Candidate in District 1, tonight finished a strong second in the endorsement vote by the Gay and Lesbian Independent Democrats. Garnering x% of the vote, Rocky said that his record of advocacy for the city’s gay and lesbian communities helped convince many in the club that he would continue to fight for their rights as a City Council Member.
“I am grateful to GLID and all its members for their continued support. As counsel for the Commission on Human Rights, I have fought, and continue to fight, on behalf of New York City’s gay and lesbian communities. Tonight’s endorsement vote indicates a particularly strong backing within the GLID membership. I am counting on this continued support through the September 11 primary.”
As counsel for the Commission on Human Rights, Rocky fought to ensure equality for the gay and lesbian communities in New York City. He first joined the Commission following the inclusion of “sexual orientation” as a protected class, helping to assure that gays and lesbians received equal consideration for jobs, homes, and municipal contracts without fear of discrimination. He also helped to procure healthcare for gay and lesbian life partners. As a founding member of the Asian American Bar Association of New York and past chair of its national Civil Rights Committee, Rocky steered the Bar Association to pass a resolution opposing California’s Knight Amendment, a carefully crafted legislative initiative designed to skirt prosecution of hate crimes.
“While the gay and lesbian movements have made great strides in getting a seat at the table, inequalities, both subtle and overt, continue to deny complete acceptance and recognition in mainstream society. I have dedicated my life to combating these injustices, both as a civil rights attorney and a friend of the gay and lesbian community, and that is why I am running for City Council.”
