New York, N.Y. -- Rocky Chin, City Council Candidate in District 1, has secured the endorsement of the Working Families Party. The group’s backing strengthens Rocky’s broad coalition of support within the District, arguably the socially, racially and economically most diverse District in New York City.
“I am grateful to the Working Families Party and all its members for their continued support. As a public interest attorney, I have fought, and continue to fight, on behalf of New York City’s working men and women. This endorsement vote indicates a particularly strong backing within the WFP membership. This year’s primary will be particularly close and I am counting on WFP’s continued support through the September 11 primary.”
Working Families Party, a coalition party launched in 1998 by community organizations, unions and individuals, backs progressive candidates running local and statewide issue campaigns. By mobilizing at the grassroots level, the WFP has helped advance a socially conscious agenda throughout the city and state. Bob Masters, Working Families Party Co-Chair, stated, "Rocky Chin has been a long-standing pro-union activist with a deep commitment to community issues. He has fought for a Living Wage, immigrant rights, affordable housing for working families and seniors, educational opportunity for our children and against sweatshops. Rocky will be an outstanding community voice on the City Council."
Rocky also recently received the endorsement of the Coalition for a District Alternative, or CoDA, an advocacy group based in the Lower East Side where Rocky resides. As the Union’s candidate, Rocky has also secured the endorsements of UNITE!, the American Federation of Musicians and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Among the city’s most respected politicians, Rocky has gathered wide-ranging support. Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins and City Council Member Guillermo Linares have endorsed Rocky in the crowded field to succeed Kathryn Freed, the District’s incumbent City Council Member.
“WFP’s endorsement is a big step forward in kicking off the summer campaigning season. We’re in for a long and grueling three months but I am confident that with the WFP’s support, we can mobilize and empower the district’s working families to get out the vote and pull out a resounding victory in September!”
