New York, N.Y. – Rocky Chin, City Council Candidate in District 1, today joined Citizen Action and other community advocates on the steps of City Hall at a press conference protesting the MTA’s decision to close 53 token booths and replace its transit workers with automated machines throughout the city. Prior to the press conference, he testified at the City Council hearing on the issue.
“The MTA’s decision to cut transit workers will put commuters at constant risk. The workers not only deter muggings, robberies and more heinous crimes, but also provide subway construction updates, directions and knowledgeable help in emergency situations. Indeed, disabled passengers and the elderly are often reliant on the courtesy of MTA workers who can provide physical assistance.”
“This decision clearly reflects the MTA’s priority to put profits before the safety and concern of its passengers. The most disturbing part about the MTA’s decision was its blatant disregard for the community’s opinion. The MTA did not hold public hearings or conduct a study to anticipate possible safety concerns for commuters. Because of this lack of accountability, I am backing City Council Resolution 1745 authorizing the City Council to hold public hearings on the MTA’s proposed plan.”
